In this moving essay, Deborah Smith—who introduced many of us to Han Kang through her translations of "The Vegetarian" and "Human Acts"—offers a deeply personal look at her journey with the Nobel laureate's work.

"Written language is my mother tongue," Smith writes, describing how Han's "razor-sharp images" come alive through her synaesthetic experience of translation. Like the sound of water "crackling" into a tin pail in a Gwangju courtyard, each word in translation carries its own color, taste, and heft.
